Charcoal Self Portrait:
Drawing and Painting assignment 3 “Self Portraits.” This drawing is of Liora Goldstein (the artist). The image shows me on a normal day, as usual me wearing a t-shirt and having my hair down. I have blonde hair, and green eyes. The image reflects these traits even though it is drawn with charcoal which is a black and white color scheme.
The title of the artwork is “Reading Inspires” for my strong love for reading and how it impacts me personally. I used book quotes from books that I have read and enjoyed over the years. Throughout the image you can see harmony where I blended my features with the words in the background. I balanced the different whites and blacks to fit the brown paper value scale. To contrast my dark hair I used white letters as the background, and the letters are the quotes. The abstract form of my shirt (made from book quotes) was used to follow my artists of inspiration Juan Osbourne, and Jamie Poole. Käthe Kollwitz also had abstract pieces in her art which she was another artist I used for inspiration. The different areas with value leading to make my face seem more realistic are inspired Käthe Kollwitz too. Throughout the piece you can view the different shapes in my face.
To create the drawing, I started with willow charcoal as a base and a guideline for darker charcoal. I sketched out where my features would go and I calculated how to fit my features perfectly onto my face. I then used darker charcoal (compressed charcoal) to shade and add value. The last steps were to add white highlights and the text in white.
Throughout the piece I wanted to bring a relaxed feeling, I did this by adding book quotes which personally books make me feel relaxed and calm. For the piece my goals were to make people see how books can describe you, I did this by picking the quotes that I think connected to me personally. In the twenty-first century I feel that reading is sometimes neglected by the new generations and I wanted to show that there are still people out there that enjoy reading. Reading is an important part of society and history so I wanted to show that the love for it is not truly lost in our society.
The big takeaway for me from creating the image was I learned how to accept my flaws as a person, I learned that even though I had to draw my nose a little bigger it was mine and without my little flaws the drawing would not be me. This is important for future art pieces because I will “draw what I see.”

Landscape:
This drawing is titled "Blue" because I learned to work with blue pastels to create the ocean and the sky. In the image you can see that there is a beach like form, however it is getting consumed by the tide, small water pools remain because of the way the sand lays, this is based on a real place. Over winter break last year my family and I visited Oahu, Hawaii. We went to Hanauma Bay, which was a snorkeling site, it was one of the prettiest places Iv'e been. I used a picture I took as inspiration. The overall shape of the area is a cove, the view from the drawing is facing the opposite side of the edge of the cove. The dark form of the land contrasts the lightness of the water. The clouds create harmony with the rest of the image, they add to the piece with the purples and grays. Also value is added in the water, the shading of the darker blues and whites, creates liveliness (waves).
To create the piece I first sketched and outlined figures of the image, then I started from the back to the front (as it is easier that way). The sky was the first to go in, I started with darker colors (pastel) at the top of the sky and left white areas for the clouds. Next I added parts of the background (the hills being that part). I used reds, blacks, and greens to make the earthy colors of the land. I worked on the ocean next, and then at last the foreground (being the colored pencil part). After that I went back and created the tree, and added final touches with charcoal pencil.
Additional inspiration came from Bob Ross and Casper David Friedrich I focused more on Bob Ross's techniques to make the background less detailed and the foreground more, but I used Casper David Friedrick's colored pencil style too to make the grass and tree stand out.
My goals for this piece was to make the image feel realistic and a duplicate of the image I took. I think that I succeeded at these goals because my image has movement which makes it seem more realistic. Also the image reminds me of the place I visited so I think that I accomplished the goal of duplicating the image. Some things I learned from creating this artwork is it is hard to work with pastels and pencils work well for details. Some things maybe next time I would change would be to maybe make the sky lighter, so it would stand out more against the water. Next time I make a landscape I will continue to develop my skills at creating realistic water too.

Color Theory Project:
This drawing is called "Pug Senses" because the orange highlights are the main senses my dog Bruno uses to find food, and basically function. Bruno tends to use his ears to listen for food, and I highlighted the ears to express that. The drawing is based on an image not of my dog, but a dog that looks very similar to him. I used blue and orange as my complementary colors because I wanted to continue practicing with blues, and also I thought that the color combination is really pretty, and visually pleasing when done well. The orange contrasts the blue of the fur, which makes the facial features stand out, also the purple and yellow highlights bring harmony between the colors.
To create the drawing I started with sketching the pug shape with regular pencil, and then I started with colored pencil. I first started with the ears, I used three different colors as a base, and added black to make the texture of hair. Then I used around five different shades of blue, and two different shades of purple to create the body, adding layers of color. Towards the end, I added highlights with black, white, yellow, and purple. I had to learn how to create fur, I still think that I could use more practice, but where I got is a good start.
My goals as an artist where to highlight the features that make pugs, pugs. Also I wanted to really show the fluffiness pugs have, by creating fur. The piece did help me reach my goals because I think that I succeed at making the pug somewhat fluffy, and I highlighted the ears, the nose, and the eyes by contrasting the orange with the blue. What I have learned from creating the project is blue and orange are really great colors to color with, they work really well together and they are visually pleasing. I learned that dark and light blue goes well with lighter orange. Also I learned that purple and yellow help make the colors work. Next time I would maybe darken the blues even more if I had more time, I think that it would have added even more depth to drawing.
For this drawing I wanted to make my viewers wonder about the pug, pugs are weird creatures, I did this by making the pug focus on something distant, and it is up for the viewers interpretation of what the pug is looking at.

Eyes: Window to the Soul
This piece of artwork is titled "Emotions" I created five very different emotions, by using a black and white color scheme. Hints of color surround the eyes to represent the emotion, and to add to the meaning of the piece. The eyes are all based off of my own eyes, each emotion is something I feel regularly. The top emotion "Fear" is represented by the purple color, when I tend to think of fear I image dark purple and light purple, something about the mix of sadness (blue) and anger (red) which I feel are two large emotions that help create fear. The second set of eyes represent "Anger" the pink watercolor represents the anger, the bursting affect of the color symbolizes the bursting of the emotion. The next set of eyes are "Confusion and Disgust", green is a color I tend to associate with gross and weird things, I won't go into detail of what those things are. Up next, is yellow which is the color in my mind for "Happiness" the sun and some flowers are yellow, both very lovely things that in general people connect to happiness. The last emotion is "Sadness". I used the old cliche of "looking blue", which is why I chose blue as the color to represent sadness. The blue also is meant to symbolize tears.
Throughout the piece I wanted to create unison with the colors and the charcoal. I wanted to have the eyes as black and white to make the colors stand out, the colors help define the emotions. When drawing the piece I worked with the shape of the eyebrows and the eyes to convey different emotions, the direction of the eyebrows changed with each emotion as did the size of the eyes. I added value to the eyes and I really tried to focus on the pupils to make them seem really realistic. I used charcoal on white paper, and then hot pressed water color paper to create the colored parts. To start off the drawings I cut out five roughly the same size sheets, I took the five different photos and then I lightly sketched the shapes of the eyes. I filled in the darker parts of the eye with charcoal pencil, and continued to add value throughout each individual piece. I noticed as I continued to draw I slowly became better at making the eyes more like me and realistic. My first drawing was the "Happiness" and my last one was "Fear" I think that I grew when drawing the pieces.
My goals for this piece were to create a representation of emotion that all humans face, as a society we forget that we share emotions in common. Through this current time of division in our country it is necessary to try to unite our differences and acknowledge our similarities. I chose fear as my top emotion because fear is an emotion that I think is prominent in these current years, anger is next because I as a society we tend to express our hate and anger towards each other before anything else. I think that I was successful at creating emotion because I spent a lot of time on making the eyes different shapes and the eyebrows different ways. I think that the drawing shows emotions I face and maybe what others face too.
While creating this drawing, I learned how to make eyes more realistic, I learned along the way how to blend the pencil to make shadows, I also learned how to really convey emotion in artwork. Eyebrows and the amount of eye shown helps create many emotions. To add, parts of an eye were concepts I reviewed and added to my skill set for future drawings. I think that next time I might make the background color black, I think that it would help really allow the elements of the piece to stand out. I am planning to continue drawing eyes and learning how to make them as amazing as I can get them because eyes are a very cool thing to draw.

Watercolor Zentangle:
This piece of artwork is based off of an image on the internet of an emperor penguin and his baby. I chose these penguins as my main part of my piece because penguins have been my favorite animal since I was two, and I thought watercolor and penguins worked well. The water color elements are the areas around the beak, the background and the baby, the micron pen areas are all the black highlights and patterns. I wanted to balance the patterns with the colors of the watercolor.
During the creation of this piece I worked on the background first, I worked on blending colors together to create unity. I chose blues and purples for the background because penguins live in cold areas, and those colors are cool colors. Some viewers have said that the background looks like Aurora Borealis, I was not aiming for that but I think that that's a cool idea. For pat terns I originally was planning on putting patterns on the baby, however I decided against this. This baby penguin is new, he hasn't learned or had experience like his father, therefore he does not have patterns. His father's patterns symbolize his life, the wavy pattern are meant to show his age and status. The waves show each memory the father has, and each situation he has overcome. Emperor penguins are the king of penguins, therefore I made the egg in the middle of his chest based off of a Faberge egg. The egg is where the father's heart is, as his baby is his heart.
My main focal point of the image I think would actually be the baby, the busier background allows the baby to stand out. For creating the designs I worked with direction and textures to carry out the message I wanted.
What I learned about balance in this piece was in order to avoid the artwork from looking cluttered, negative space was needed. The negative space allowed for a viewer's eyes to focus on the more detailed aspects within the piece. Also I learned that when creating penguins there should be a balance between the yellow highlights and the black elements. Through creating this artwork I learned how to blend watercolors, how to balance elements of paint and marker. This piece took both drawing and painting skills.
One goal I had for this piece was to show the "Emperor" in the penguin, I think that I accomplished this by creating the patterns. A challenge I faced were painting around the shape of the penguins, it was hard to control the water color sometimes. But, as I was working I got better at anticipating how the water color would move around my paper. In the future I might want to work on the baby penguin, add more realistic elements to him, maybe some white highlights somewhere. this piece will influence my future pieces by adding balance to all my pieces of artwork.

Tempera Batik:
How Tempera Batik relates to real life:
The three layers of paint required to create tempera batik can symbolize many different aspects in one's life. For me the three layers of paint creates the idea that I have to practice and get experience before I can complete something. Also the three layers of paint can symbolize tries to perfection, in life I need to again practice in order to make things stay and remain successful kind of like the paint. For example in math class I have to practice different methods many times before I can be successful, I have to practice too in order to insure that I can actually do the task.
Painting over the entire image with black ink is part of the process to create the final product for me is representation of something bad in life, taking over every aspect of my life. The solidity of the color creates the idea for me that some bad aspects never really go away, similar to the black ink in the end. However aspects can be forgotten or washed away (like the ink). For example sometimes I have really bad days, they make me feel like a frailer and like I am nothing. However I try to stay positive and wash away those feelings. Mistakes are what make humans, humans. The three steps for me kind of represent my life. Through making mistakes and working to correct them, (the three layers) I can feel down, however I try to get back up again and try again (black ink being washed off).
The after effect of the paint and the texture created also relates to life. For me the texture left behind the black ink represents the aspects in my life that suck but in the end make more stronger. In the end the ink makes the art piece really different and unique, similar to my experiences they help make me who I am.

Julie Dunn - A Tempera Batik Artist
This piece is called "Daylilies", I am inspired by this piece because of her use of oranges and yellows similar to my piece. I also really like how the black Indy ink looks with the colors.

Tempera Batik Flowers:
This piece is based off of our pretest project which was to recreate a close up image of a flower, the image was originally done in black and white (charcoal and pencil), however here I used the Tempera Paint and Indy Ink. I was inspired by Julie Dunn who is a Tempera Batik artist, I really liked one of her pieces with orange and yellow flowers. My piece reflects similar colors, I wanted to use dark oranges and yellows to create a flower inspired by her piece. The title of this piece is "Origin" because the actual middle of the flower is the origin of color in my mind. The colorful pedals grow out of the center, they originate from the center. The brown in the center is also like a base color, not too bright or eye catching but as you let your eyes wonder around the center the bright color begins to form.
In the creation of my piece the steps were really fun. I really enjoyed painting with the tempera batik and then covering it with the ink. As discussed above the whole process was very relative to my life, the three layers required to create the piece symbolized multiple tries and practices at something in life. The black ink step where we covered the entire paper with the ink related to the idea of something negative or bad consuming my emotions, however washing it off in the end meant a new beginning.
At first when I washed off all the ink I was not entirely happy with the results, the blue highlights I had originally washed off for the most part because I did not put enough paint on the paper. However the black pattern created was cool in certain areas, the way I put on the ink (side to side) sort of showed, it actually really added to the overall direction of the image. When I first started the piece there really was not a lot of direction in the pedals, they looked a little flat, so I think the ink actually helped. Later after the ink step, I decided to go back in and add some of the blues and purples. The contrast of the warm colors and the cool colors really makes the image more realistic. I also really like it because it's very colorful. The dark blues also create shadows which is really helpful to make the flower look more like a flower shape.
My goal for this piece was to re-create the pretest (this can be found on the practice drawings page) but to add color. I think that I succeeded at this goal because I think that adding color to the image made it more visually pleasing on many levels, and more interesting as well.
During the process of creating this piece I learned that layers are important for certain projects, also I learned that contrasting colors are really helpful to make an image more balanced. Next time I think that I would maybe add some white highlights to show maybe where light is reflecting off of the flower, or even some water drops like a wet flower. I am however really happy with how it looks.

Linoleum Print Making:
This piece is based off of a really cool image that I found on the internet, I really liked the composition of the picture because the flower which had many leaves facing in different directions were really visually pleasing. Additionally, I really loved that the flower was in the circle in the middle, normally this is not what you want with composition because of the rule of thirds, however the image still follows the rule because the flower is not symmetric and certain areas stand out more than others. Also the border on the outside covers around 1/3 or so of the image. My image is however different than the one online because I added and kept the black marks on the outside of the flower, I think it gives the art a more rustic look, and it makes it look like wood. I also think that the texture on the outside really shows that each print is different and unique in it's own way which is awesome.
During the creation of this piece I figured out how to use the carving tool, as I got closer and closer to the end I learned more about how to really use all of the blade. I noticed as I was carving depending how you hold the tool you can get different shaped cuts. I also practiced a lot over spring break so I got a lot better with control in smaller areas. The prints below are just a few of the projects I did outside of school, the last one I did was actually the other night and I printed with fabric ink on a shirt. I really fell in love with this form of art because you can get as many prints as you want of the same piece of art. I think that is super useful. The full process of creating this piece involved first printing out my image. Then I drew with pastel on the back and cut the image to fit my linoleum plate. I then traced over the image and the pastel was pushed through onto the linoleum leaving a traced out copy of the image. I then went over the piece with sharpie, and then I began to carve. To carve I heated up the plate and then I made "an airplane landing" motion to carve.
To print my artwork I rolled the ink out on a separate tray and then I rolled the ink on the linoleum. I then placed a paper on top and pressed it down, when I took off the linoleum plate the print was created. In order to not get a salty print I found putting more ink and leveling the ink out would prevent this. For this art piece I did not have any salty prints, I only printed 6 times. However, the ones below I got a few salty prints because I made around 10 copies of each.
My artist of inspiration is Dennis Revitzky (https://www.annexgalleries.com/inventory/detail/18280/Dennis-Revitzky/Desert-Night) the piece of art of his that inspired me was "Dessert Night" which can be seen on the url above. I really loved his piece because he used the carving technique to really portray texture within his scene. The mountains are a really good example of this in the art piece, I took the similar texture and tried to create the texture on the flower pedals.
My goal for this flower piece was to really find the balance between the black and white, I think that I succeeded because the contrast of the colors was used to really add definition to the flower. A challenge I faced during the creation of this piece was I struggled with carving some of the smaller sections, however the practice I did has really helped me for my future carvings. If I were to change one thing in the piece I would maybe try to print the piece without the black wood texture just to see what it would look like, and maybe I would add a border.

Some More Carvings I Did Over Spring Break:
Missing Pieces Final:
These are the the first stages of this project. On the left I have my three practice sketches where I experimented with different color combinations. In the middle is the final sketch of the piece. On the right I practiced painting and exploring the different textures of acrylic on water color paper. I wanted to better understand the way the paint can mix and or blend.
This piece is based off of a photo my sister took of me, I wanted to paint the image because I thought it had an interesting composition. With the books surrounding my head in a circular motion I thought it was unique and could be painted well. The title of this piece would be a quote by Jane Austen "The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid." This was the quote I used for the caption on my Instagram post, and I thought it described my opinion of books well. Also my first project at the beginning of the year was a self portrait. It had quotes surrounding my head. Similar to this image I really wanted to incorporate books. This painting is a take on the first drawing. I flipped myself upside down which is opposite of the self portrait. The portrait also only had white as color, so I wanted to use the rainbow design to really make it stand out. The books in this painting are similar to the quotes in my portrait.
For the color composition of this piece I want to use a lot of color. When you read a book you experience many different emotions, additionally, books are classified in many different categories (romance, fantasy, horror etc). I wanted to represent this with the book rainbow. I started with darker reds on the right side and moved to dark purples on the left. I wanted to create a sort of "ombre" look. I left my shirt blank (missing piece) to show the simpleness I feel when I read. I become one with the book. This is also why I wanted to paint my overalls black. The book on my stomach shows in a way I am absorbing the value of the book, it is grey because it shows the transition between reality and a book's fantasy. I tried to balance the image too by doing this, the contrast of the white and black against the bright colors makes me stand out and the books. In the end it brings harmony to the overall piece because of this balance of color.
To create this piece I first practiced sketching the image out on regular sketch paper. It took me a while to really get the sketch right. After I got a good base for the painting I drew three separate sketches and played with different color combinations (they can be seen above). The first image on the left it sort of my take on warm and cool colors, the second one I focused a lot on blank spaces, and the last one is the one I went with (the rainbow). I also practiced with acrylic, I mixed many different colors and got really good at creating shades of blues and greens. The practice painting strokes can be seen above too. In the end I learned a lot about how the paint moves on paper and how it mixes.
In the piece I tried to convey peace, I think that I succeeded through the emotion shown on my face. Also the contrast of the white and black to the vibrant colors to me seems relaxing. I also wanted to really show my improvement when it came to sketching from the beginning of the year and my overall painting skills. I think that I really worked hard on my face in this painting and that it looks pretty good. I think that I have improved a lot as an artist.
If I had to do this project again I would maybe work on my shading more with paint. I think that as a sketcher I have gotten better at shading but paint shading is still pretty new to me. I think that I would also learn how to paint hair, the hair in the piece could be a little more defined.
** This is my last project this year 2018-2019 (9th grade). I want to thank Mrs. O'Ryan for being an amazing art teacher and for always sticking with my crazy class. I am thankful for all that she has taught me, and I am really going to miss her next year.
